I think where some lakes ban under 16's or under 18's it can be hard for kids to get into fishing properly, unless they go with a parent etc.

Never ever have had those remarks about fishing and age, i think that it's just people who have nothing els to do or just haven't got a hobby.
Now there the sad ones ;D

No. 12, if you have a love for fishing then please don't listen to your peers at school. You have something they don't have, "a hobby" and that is a good thing Stick in there matey. When they are down the off licence getting p*ssed on cheap cider, you'll be down the lake bagging that 20 your after ;D Shakey

The biggest reason they say that is because they feel threaten by someone that does there own think, and dont follow the crowd.
for example. A person i know thinks i cant have a good time because i dont like going to the pub and get pi**ed, I'd much perfer to stay in and have a few indoor, ;D it's a lot cheap to ;D

I do not believe that fishing and drinking go together as already said a social one or two is ok but to get plastered as some do they should never be fishing in the first place, if you want to drink go to the pub if you want to fish go to the lakes.
