If like me at this time of the year you turn up at the venue and it's pitch black and your unsure of the swim a great way to be accurate is cast out your feature finding / marker rod, once you have found the area you want to fish, wind down until you feel the resistance from the lead and clip up then wind it in.
Take your rod to the track or nearby field etc and lay the line out then with your carp rod lay the line out adjacent to the marker line adding approximately six feet onto the length clip up and wind it back in then when you cast it out you will be on your spot, sounds like a lot of work but it's worth it, much better than a pub chuck so to speak.
If it is windy allow a bit more line to compensate for the bow of line.

The only problems with leaving a marker out is first it's anti social and secondly you could lose a fish if it tethers on your marker, seen it happen before. The angler was gutted to say the least.
