I got asked an interesting question by a lad at the weekend that I could give no positive answer to. Q. Why do carp repeatedly leap out of water. Playing, catching flies, posing for the girls......what do you think? i reckon its when they are getting chased by sharks.

I would have thought it was something to do with spawning or it could just be that they are playing.

I believe that there are a few reasons, one being that they are trying to dislodge or just get rid of parasites and the second is that a carp will jump (sometimes) before or after its just about to or finish feeding clearing out there gills. Do you agree with this or do you have other reasons for this happening? And i seem to think that a carp might jump when its happy, i know you might think that I'm a spake for saying that but over the hot spell during the summer the lake water level droped by nearly a foot but when i was out fishing and the rain came in the carp started to jump everywhere as if they were enjoying and having fun in the rain. Anyone agree with that point of view.?

I truly believe that when a carp leaps as Tarpon pointed out they are clearing their gills after or during feeding and also to try and rid themselves of leeches and parasites etc, however if a carp just head and shoulders they are going to feed in that area, though not allways straight away, simular to scent marking if you like.
