had a strange one the other evening. i put both baits out for an evening session and sat down and waited, during the evening(days only water) i had just a single bleep on the right hand rod and two bleeps on the left, anyway come packing up time i wound in the right hand rod clear of weed so was bang on the mark i wanted, then started to wind in the left rod and thought i had picked up a bit of weed but as it came skimming across the surface i realised it was an eel. nuts i thought its nearly dark and i got to deal with a bloody eel, i got it in the margins and slid my hand down the line to within 4 inches of the eels mouth to unhook it in the water waiting for it to start squirming and twisting my rig up. it didnt move so i lifted it out the water and it just hung there, it was dead and you could see a bulge about 2 inches down its throat where my bait was, now the thing is when i wound the rod in the lead was exactly where i cast it and i had got no indication that it was there hanging onto my bait. how it bloody died or how long it had been lying there out in the lake with my bait in its mouth god knows, anybody else had any strange happenings like that?

Never heard of an eel dieing before on the end of a rod and line, How long was your bait out there for? as the only thing that i can think of is that when the eel took the bait down it's throat, it couldn't breathe and drowned as eels are air breathers. i think

bait was only out for about 4-5 hours, i know from my fish farming days that the eels heart is just behind its head so maybe my hook speared it , who knows, like you say maybe it drowned but the lead was in the same place i cast it so it didnt move when it took the bait so must have died fairly instantly
